Kinesiology tape sticks to the hair and lifts the skin. The lifting effect decompresses the underlying tissues: fascia, muscle, nerves, lymphatic system and joints. The tape communicates with the brain through mechanoreceptors. Tactile (touch) input enters the spinal cord and a message is carried via the corticospinal tract to the somatosensory cortex of the brain. A message is then encoded to the motor cortex and that message is sent in the afferent pathway, in the spinal cord, back to the muscle with instruction in response to the input.
The correct application, with the correct tension, with the correct direction of pull, knowledge of the anatomy and correct surface preparation, yields benefits of the tape.
Elastic kinesiology tape doesn’t restrict movement. Adhesive is laid in a wave pattern to optimize breathability, adhesion and lifespan. The tape is pre-stretched on the backing to 10% for most applications but has the capability to stretch 0-100% as needed for individual applications.
That's a question I frequently get when introducing tape into a treatment plan. I've had tape applications very successfully last 4-6 weeks. However, you do not want to leave an application on that long.
As a rule of thumb, this is how long I like to leave my applications.
Muscle tension, muscle support and fascia work: 5 - 7 days
Proprioception: 3 - 7 days
Circulation web: 7 days
Arthritic joint support: up to 14 days
Tendon/Ligament support: 7 - 14 days
Note: It is recommended not to leave most applications on any longer than 7 days as the body can become accustomed to the tape and it will no longer be communicating with the brain for the desired outcome.
Tape can be left on during turn-out, stall rest, trailering and you can even ride with it on.. actually, I encourage you to ride with a joint support or proprioception application. You'll feel the difference in your horse!
